Indiana Public Schools is Hiring a Bus driver Near Hammond, IN

General Role and Responsibilities

The sub School Bus Driver is a member of the Transportation Department who assists in the transporting of children to and from school, as well as related activities, in a prompt and safe manner.

General Skills and Qualifications

Possess and Maintain a Valid CDL and DOT Physical throughout length of employment

  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and submit necessary communication to appropriate staff
  • Follow assigned routes as written. Should a change need to be done, communicate with the route coordinator to change, do not make any changes to the route without permission.

Obey all traffic laws as they relate to school bus transportation

  • Display tact, courtesy and maintain a wholesome relationship with students, parents, teachers, fellow employees and administrator
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality in regard to student, parent, school and transportation relationships
  • Maintain acceptable punctuality and attendance
  • Assist Bus Monitor in loading, unloading and properly securing passengers who require restraint systems, using safe and responsible procedures
  • Any motor vehicle violations must be reported to the supervisor within 24 hours
  • Become familiar with accident reporting procedures as stated in the Employee Manual
  • Do not permit any child to disembark from the bus unless a 16 year or older responsible party is there to assist that child into the home unless the department has written authorization
  • Never leave students unattended
  • Check the bus after each student drop and at the end of each and every run for items or children left on the bus. IF EITHER DRIVER OR MONITOR DOES NOT DO THEIR JOB AS DESCRIBED OR A STUDENT IS LEFT ON BOARD, THIS WILL BE AUTOMATIC TERMINATION
  • Walk around bus at beginning of each run to check for body damage.
  • Hang keys up in the Transportation Office at the end of each run.
  • Operate the bus two-way radio correctly and according to FCC regulations and Transportation Department policy.
  • Keep the bus clean and orderly with daily pick up and sweeping
  • Maintain communication with parents of students by weekly phone calls.
  • Do not allow any unauthorized person(s) on the school bus.
  • Delegate appropriate tasks to the School Bus Monitor (if applicable)
  • Bus drivers who violate traffic rules and regulations are responsible for payment of citations issued.
  • Become familiar with all policies and procedures in the Transportation handbook
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

High School Diploma or GED. Must hold a valid CDL

Personal Attributes Desired

Ability to Communicate Orally and Written. Open to work with a wide variety of individuals.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to hear and speak. The employee occasionally is required to lift, drag or carry. The employee is required to Pass a Physical examination before employment.

Continued expectation to be able to meet Annual performance expectations as outlined by the State Department of Transportation.
